Best Car Tune-Up in Seattle, WA

To keep your car running smoothly and avoid costly repairs later on, you should follow a regular tune-up schedule. A well-timed tune-up not only boosts your car’s performance and fuel efficiency but also helps protect your investment. During a tune-up, your mechanic will inspect and replace several key components (if necessary), followed by diagnostic tests to ensure everything’s in top shape. While your car manufacturer offers guidelines on when tune-ups should be done, you can have them performed anytime your ride needs a little TLC.

Our mobile mechanics love fixing cars, but we also want you to get the most out of your tune-ups, so we recommend following your manufacturer’s schedule. The more you keep up with these, the fewer times you’ll have to call us for a big, expensive repair. Win-win!

    Ignition System

The ignition system is often the cause of engine troubles. Modern cars have computerized controllers taking over some functions, but there are still several components that could require attention during a tune-up, depending on your vehicle.

    Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are responsible for igniting the fuel in your engine. They have a small metal tip that gradually wears down due to heat, pressure, and the constant sparking they do. As this wear increases, the gap between the electrodes grows, causing the plug to either fire inconsistently or not at all.

This results in what’s called a misfire, which happens when the fuel in a cylinder doesn’t ignite properly. When replacing spark plugs during a tune-up, it’s best to stick with the original parts recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer for optimal performance.

    Ignition Wires

Over time, ignition wires can degrade, causing a disconnect between the spark plug and the ignition coil. When that connection fails, you’re left with a cylinder that’s not firing. Our recommendation? Replace all ignition wires together. These wires need to be the same gauge and follow the specific firing order of your engine. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck with an engine that runs rough, trying to fire out of sync.

Distributor Cap & Rotor (if applicable)

If your car still uses a distributor cap and rotor, these can wear out, too. Inside the cap is a rotating arm that connects with metal points to send sparks to the spark plugs. As these points wear down, you might experience random or no firing at all. During your tune-up, we’ll make sure both parts are replaced together for optimal performance.

    Filters

Your car’s filters are the unsung heroes of engine performance, keeping harmful contaminants from entering your engine or cabin. A clogged filter can take a toll on your engine’s health.

    Air Filters

Your engine constantly sucks in air, but along with that air comes dust and debris. Over time, the air filter can become clogged, reducing performance and fuel efficiency. In older, carbureted engines, a dirty air filter can lower your MPG by up to 14%. While modern fuel-injected cars may not see the same impact on MPG, performance will still suffer. A clean air filter is key to keeping things running smoothly.

    Oil Filter

Oil moves through your engine to keep it lubricated, and a clean oil filter is essential for keeping out particles that can cause wear. If the filter gets clogged, contaminants can circulate, potentially causing high oil pressure and damage internal components. We recommend changing the oil filter with every oil change to ensure your engine stays in good shape.

    PCV Valve

The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve helps control engine oil consumption and maintains the correct air-fuel ratio. Over time, it can clog with carbon deposits, leading to higher oil consumption and an imbalance in the air-fuel mixture. Replacing the PCV valve during your tune-up can help prevent these issues.

    Belts

Your engine uses several belts for different tasks, and over time, these can stretch, fray, or crack. Regularly replacing belts during a tune-up can help you avoid a breakdown. Seattle’s mild but unpredictable weather can also wear out belts, so it’s always a good idea to make sure they’re in tip-top shape.

    Fluids

Fluids are the lifeblood of your engine. We’ll check all fluid levels during a tune-up and top them up as needed. Many fluids, such as coolant and brake fluid, may also require a change if specific components have been worked on.

    Battery

Seattle’s weather isn’t as brutal as the desert, but the dampness can still wreak havoc on your car’s battery, reducing its lifespan to 2 years. Extreme weather can also cause battery corrosion and other issues. During a tune-up, we’ll check your battery’s health and replace it if necessary to keep you from getting stranded on those rainy Seattle nights.

Pro tip: When it’s time for a replacement, opt for a battery with a 3—to 5-year warranty. That way, you’ll be covered when it does need replacing!
